Description

Stonington Blend™ Grower’s Mix is a complex “super soil” designed for high performance container growing. It works well with most any plant and will provide exceptional results to your victory garden. This soil incorporates mycorrhizal fungi, kelp, fish bone and alfalfa meal, as well as worm castings, peat, coir, and lobster compost. When growing in 15 gallon containers, there is no need for additional nutrients. OMRI Listed®.

The Coast of Maine Difference

Here at Coast of Maine we are proud of the quality and consistency of our compost-based soils. Compost (naturally decomposed organic matter), we believe, is the key ingredient. Ours are made using carefully designed and tested recipes which include the very best ingredients (sustainably sourced from pristine ocean waters and local farms) combined with rigorous quality controls. We never use biosolids, municipal or household waste. Close attention to detail with frequent turning, sampling and testing, plus a lengthy aging and curing process, produces dark, rich compost that builds soil and enhances plant growth.

Stonington Blend™ Organic & Natural Grower’s Mix is the ideal soil for high-performance, organically raised crops, whether field or container grown. It is carefully formulated to provide balance between structure, water retention, drainage and aeration for growing strong, vigorous plants. It provides the rich and diverse soil your plants need.

We use all natural ingredients

Stonington Blend is 40% sphagnum peat moss, coco fiber (coir), composted manure, perlite, fertilizer (see below) and mycorrhizae.

This unique container mix is named after the historic fishing village of Stonington, located on the south shore of Deer Isle in East Penobscot Bay. Settled in the 1760’s, Stonington is today Maine’s largest commercial fishing port and once home to an important granite quarrying industry.

Stonington Blend contains viable mycorrhizal propagules per cubic centimeter (cc) of the following organism:

Endo Mycorrhizae species:
Glomus intraradices              @ 00.07 spores/cc

Endomycorrhizal fungi colonize approximately 80% of the world’s plant species, including most vegetables, fruit trees and shrubs, flowering plants, grasses, legumes and many more. For more information about mycorrhizae visit: https://www.usemyke.com

Storage: Store this bag in a cool, dry, shaded place, avoiding direct sunlight.

Follow these few simple steps

Getting Ready – How much Stonington Blend Grower’s Mix will you need?

This 1.5 cubic foot bag will fill

  • (36) 1 quart (6″) pots
  • (9) 1 gallon (8″) pots
  • (3) 3 gallon (10″) pots
  • (2) 5 gallon (14″) pots
  • (1) 10 gallon (20″) pot

The above are approximations, as the actual amount of Grower’s Mix needed will de-pend on the size of your plant’s root ball.

Make sure your selected pot(s) have drainage holes.

If you are combining different plants, make sure they are good companions (i.e. they like similar amounts of sun or shade and moisture conditions).

Transplanting into larger containers

  • Seedlings or clones should be transplanted into larger containers when they have sprouted their 4th or 5th set of leaves. (We recommend our Sprout Island™ Seed Starter for germinating seeds.)
  • Water your plants 1 – 2 days before transplanting. This will help to keep the rootball intact in the potting soil and help it slide out of its pot more easily.
  • Fill the transplant container with Stonington Blend™ and pre-water. (Avoid overpacking the soil as this can affect drainage and could damage the tender roots.)
  • Scoop out a hole in the soil for each plant deep enough so the top of the rootball will end up about 1” below the top of the pot.
  • Carefully remove the plants from their smaller containers and place into the holes in the transplant container.
  • Add more soil until it is level all around your plants.
  • Water lightly to avoid disturbing the top layer of soil.

Maintenance

Container plants need to be regularly watered and occasionally fed. For best results, water only when   the soil is slightly dry to the touch. Because Stonington Blend™ is naturally dark in color, it may be hard to tell just by sight. Feed as needed with an organic plant food.

Organic certification

Stonington Blend Grower’s Mix meets the organic production standards of the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and is OMRI listed for organic
